Gel X nail extensions at Velvet Files are soft gel tips applied and cured over your natural nail — no acrylic monomer, no drilling, no heavy filing. We use the Aprés Gel-X system with HEMA-free adhesive gel and finish every set with The Gel Bottle gel polish, both vegan and cruelty-free.
Gel X is a standalone service that books separately from our signature manicure tiers. The appointment includes consultation, nail prep, tip fitting, extension application, and a full gel polish finish. Expect 75–90 minutes for a complete set.

NOTE: If you currently have gel polish or previous extensions, a soak-off add-on removes them before application. This is not included in the base price.
Your appointment starts with a one-on-one consultation. Your technician discusses the shape, length, and design you want — coffin, almond, round, stiletto, or square — and assesses the condition of your natural nails. If there is existing damage, thinning, or lifting from previous extensions, your technician will flag it before proceeding and recommend whether a nail repair add-on is appropriate.
Existing polish or extensions are removed if needed. Your technician then cleans, shapes, and lightly buffs the natural nail surface to ensure proper adhesion. Cuticles are pushed back and trimmed using autoclave-sterilized instruments — the same sterilization standard used in medical settings. All tools are sterilized between every client appointment.
Our house-made cuticle oil is applied to hydrate the nail bed and surrounding skin. The blend includes olive oil, rice bran oil, and vitamin E oil, with essential oils — sweet orange, grapefruit, geranium, myrrh, cedarwood, and lavender — selected for both their skin-conditioning properties and their scent. At 5,000 feet with low humidity year-round, Fort Collins clients consistently present with dehydrated cuticles. This step addresses that before the extension goes on, not after.
Aprés Gel-X tips come in 11 sizes per shape. Your technician selects and sizes each tip to match the natural contour of your individual nail beds. Proper fit prevents air pockets, lifting, and discomfort — and determines how long the extensions last without maintenance. Tips are trimmed and shaped to your requested length before application.
A thin layer of Aprés Extend Gel (HEMA-free) is applied to both the natural nail and the underside of the soft gel tip. The tip is positioned carefully, then cured under LED light to bond the gel adhesive. Each nail is checked for smooth adhesion with no air bubbles before moving to the next. The process uses no liquid monomer, no powder polymer, and no electric drill.
The Gel Bottle gel polish is applied in thin, even layers over the cured extensions. Each layer is cured under a UV/LED light individually. Your technician applies a base coat, one or more color coats depending on opacity, and a top coat to seal the finish. If you've added nail art or chrome, those are applied between the color and top coat layers. The final cure locks the full set in place.
Each step uses only the highest quality, non-toxic products to ensure your nails remain healthy and beautiful.

Velvet Files does not offer acrylic nail services due to their risks. Acrylic application requires mixing a ethyl methacrylate (EMA) — with a powder polymer. Monomers can cause contact dermatitis and respiratory irritation, particularly for technicians with repeated daily exposure.
Gel X extensions eliminate monomer exposure entirely. The Aprés system uses a pre-formed soft gel tip bonded with a HEMA-free gel adhesive — no mixing, no fumes, no heavy filing of the natural nail surface.
Aprés Gel-X Extend Gel is HEMA-free, vegan, and cruelty-free. HEMA is a common adhesion promoter in gel products that can cause contact allergies in some clients and technicians. The HEMA-free formulation is safe for clients who have developed sensitivities to traditional gel systems. The Gel Bottle gel polish used for the color finish is 100% vegan and PETA-certified cruelty-free.
Fort Collins sits at approximately 5,000 feet elevation with semi-arid air year-round. Low humidity accelerates moisture loss from the nail plate and surrounding skin, which directly affects extension adhesion and longevity. Our cuticle oil and house-made balm are formulated to counteract that dehydration before the extension is bonded — not as an afterthought.
All instruments used during Gel X appointments are autoclave-sterilized between clients. Surfaces are treated with hospital-grade disinfectants. Single-use disposables — files, buffers, and applicators — are used wherever sterilization is not possible. These are the same protocols applied across every service at Velvet Files, not a special measure for extensions.
Autoclave-sterilized instruments, hospital-grade surface disinfectants, and single-use disposables at every station. Velvet Files has maintained these standards since opening in 2014. If sanitation matters to you — and it should when someone is working on your nail bed — ask any salon you visit what their sterilization protocol is and whether they use an autoclave.
Gel services at Velvet Files are backed by a 7-day chip-free guarantee. If the work doesn’t hold, we correct it. This applies to Gel X extensions and to gel polish on natural nails.
Velvet Files has maintained a positive reputation since opening in Old Town Fort Collins in 2014. Reviews consistently reference the cleanliness of the salon, the attentiveness of technicians, and the longevity of the finished work. That consistency across more than a decade of service is not something a newer or higher-volume salon can replicate.
Gel X extensions are pre-formed soft gel tips manufactured by Aprés Nail. They are bonded to the natural nail using Aprés Extend Gel, a HEMA-free, vegan, cruelty-free adhesive that cures under LED/UV light. The system uses no liquid monomer and no powder polymer — the materials that define traditional acrylic application.
With proper nail prep and application, Gel X extensions typically last 3–4 weeks. Clients who apply cuticle oil daily and avoid using their nails as tools consistently reach the longer end of that range. Fort Collins’ dry climate can work in your favor here — lower humidity means less expansion and contraction at the bond line, which reduces lifting.
Gel X is a gentler method than acrylics. There is no heavy filing or drilling of the natural nail surface, no monomer exposure, and removal is done by soaking in acetone rather than prying or drilling off. That said, any extension adds weight and length to the natural nail. If your nails are significantly damaged or thinned from previous acrylic wear, your technician may recommend a recovery period with gel polish or overlays before applying extensions.
Yes. Aprés Gel-X tips are available in coffin, almond, round, stiletto, and square. Each shape comes in 11 sizes and multiple length options. Your technician fits, trims, and shapes each tip during the appointment to match your preference and hand proportions.
Gel X extensions are soaked off with acetone. Your technician files the top coat to break the seal, wraps each nail in acetone-soaked material, and allows the gel to dissolve. The soft gel tip lifts away without drilling or prying. A soak-off with service is available as an add-on ($10) if you need previous extensions or gel polish removed before your new set.
Apply cuticle oil daily — our house-made blend with olive oil, rice bran oil, and vitamin E is available for purchase at the salon. Avoid acetone-based products between appointments. Wear gloves for cleaning and household tasks. Do not use your nails as tools to open, scrape, or pry things. These steps directly affect how long your set lasts.
All technicians are licensed through Colorado DORA. Our team is small and consistent — most clients see the same technician across multiple visits, which supports a more informed and personalized service over time.
